I am continuing on with the subscription donation project. The organization for October is Heart of Dinner. If you need a refresher about the project, you can always find more details of the project on my About page.
This newsletter means a lot to me. If you are connecting with the work at all, please consider clicking the heart button, leaving a comment, and/or sharing it.
Earlier today, as I was deciding what to write about, I realized that I left out some of my spooky recommendations last week in an attempt at a less lengthy newsletter and…what’s that? Are you saying I’m doing more recommendations because I don’t have any other ideas? How very dare you!!
Ahem…anyway, here are a few more spooky recommendations for your haunted season.
Decor
I have been decorated for Fall-oween for weeks now and I am a big proponent of more is more when it comes to decorating for anything. My go-to for decorations (both Halloween and Christime-time) is Target. I search the Target website nearly daily from mid-September until…well, the end of the year. For affordable and shippable decor that is not Amazon, take a look.Â
But really, my favorite thing is to stumble upon holiday decor that becomes a staple in the general decor. I bought these Halloween themed coasters last year and they have not left my table all year. This year, I bought a Hocus Pocus Black Flame prayer candle from one of my favorite local shops and you can bet that is going to stay out.Â
A Few More Visual Entertainments
Caitlin Doughty, author of two of the books on my reading list last week, is a mortician who also has a YouTube channel. She talks a lot about the death industry, green burial, and historical death things in a very accessible way. Check her out here.
I did, of course, mention Rachel Maksy last week but I also want to point out her Instagram where she does the Thirteen Days of Maks-oween which is even more spooky outfit inspiration.
Another something to check out on Instagram is my dear friend Charlotte’s nail art account. It’s good content all year round but you can bet there will be some good spookiness. Â
Another Movie Entertainment
ParaNorman (rent on Amazon): This was another one I watched for the first time last year and was surprised by how heartfelt it is. I watched the movie again this week and it definitely pulled at the heart strings again.Â
Oh and a list of some classics that I often work my way through as well: Hocus Pocus (Disney+), Practical Magic (HBOMax), Nightmare before Christmas (Disney+), The Addams Family 1991 (free of Pluto, rent on Amazon), Casper (Hulu), Halloweentown (Disney+), Beetlejuice (HBOMax) etc. etc. etc.Â
Drinks
I’m a whiskey gal all year round but my go-to cocktails of an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan feel particularly cozy this time of year. Of course, throw in a Hot Toddy every now and then and I am having a good time. There are standard ways to make these cocktails and also a myriad of variations so I’ll leave the googling to you. However, if you are looking to try a new brand of whiskey for the season, check out Uncle Nearest or Bender’s Whiskey Co.
Food
Cozy eats and spooky treats, I love ‘em! A couple of recipes I have tried and loved through various fall times:
Devil’s Food Cake - I only used the cake part of this recipe for a recent cake so I know that part is very good. Plus I am definitely an Erin Jeanne McDowell fan. She’s delightful. The proof is in the cornbread.Â
Vanilla Chai Shortbread Cookies
Pumpkin Whoopie Pies
Creamy Vegan Potato Leek Soup
Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese with Caramelized Onion, Bacon, and Apple
Blood
And, once again, if y’all have suggestions for this spooky season, drop them in the comments and share with the party!
