Hello from a very snowy landscape.
I am continuing on with the subscription donation project. The organization for December is The Trevor Project. If you are new here (welcome!) or need a refresher, you can always find more details of the project on my About page. And if you want to be a matching donor, let me know.
Thank you for being with me on this journey. This newsletter means a lot to me. If you are connecting with the work at all, please consider clicking the heart button and/or leaving a comment. And sharing the newsletter will make my heart grow three sizes this season.
The holiday season is always so busy. There never seems to be enough time. And I think I know a way we can try to tick everything off your list.
It’s time for a holiday montage choose your own adventure!
To start:
Soon, very soon, you will be heading out for holiday travel. Your list is long and your time is limited. The best first thing to take care of is probably anything outside your apartment. You put on your coat and hat and get ready to head out in the crowds. It starts to snow. Do you?:
Keep on keepin’ on. The snowfall is a little bit magical and these presents aren’t going to buy themselves. You confidently throw open the door, head out into the crowds and weather, and straight into your present buying montage.
The snow is beautiful and it’s a perfect time to stay inside, put on a holiday classic, and make a baked good. You prepared. You bought all your ingredients ahead of time. Time to put on the apron, preheat the oven, and destroy the kitchen in your baking montage.
Choice A:
The present buying was so successful, your arms are full of bags. You fumble with your keys as you try to get into the door, eventually stumbling in and dropping your treasures on the floor. What do you want to check off the list next?
Wrap the presents, of course! You venture into your closet, pull out all the wrapping supplies and get to it. It’s a montage of scissors and colorful paper, bows and boxes.
Presents can wait, it’s time for some baking. See choice B for the very sweet and messy baking montage and go on from there.
Choice B:
These baked goods are spectacular. You are a very talented baker, my friend. But there’s no time to waste. There are still many things to get done. What now?
You bake for other people, so the baked goods are gifts. This montage covers the packaging of the candies, cookies, and pastries, the setting up of drop offs, and the joyful holiday food exchanges with friends.
There is energy in your apartment. Baking always inspires you to more productivity. You decide it’s time to wrap presents. See choice 1 to be the best Santa of the year and go on from there.
Choice 1:
The living room is covered in remnants of shiny paper, tiny pieces of ribbon, and half used tissue paper. As you cut the wrapping paper for the final present, you have a bit of a slip, and cut your finger. Fingers bleed the most. How do you handle this bloody development?
You hear the voice of someone smarter than you in your head. “It’s bleeding a lot, you know. Don’t be a dummy. Go to the doctor.” This is not a montage. This is just a trip to urgent care because, for once, you are being smart.
It’s just a little cut! Don’t worry about it. You have too much to do. This is a montage FULL of stuff: cleaning up, stacking up presents, realizing you don’t have as much time to pack as you thought, packing kind of frantically. The montage comes to an end when you realize, oh shit, you don’t have any travel toiletries.
Okay, now choice…who knows?
Honestly, the chances of getting everything done is probably slim. But hey, that’s okay. Ultimately, you just want to get to the travel and out of the city because you could use a little less noise, there. A little less noise.
Regardless of checking every item off the list or not, the next montage is the trip. It starts with a delayed flight and seven hours at JFK. I hope you have a book.

If you don’t have a meeting point under a creepy overpass with a dear friend for cake exchanges, what are you even doing?
